IDC Finds Demand for PCs from SME Market is Strong in 2005

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, April 11th, 2005 – IDC has recently completed a comprehensive study of the local Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) market titled, 'Australian SME Buying Behaviour: Desktop and Mobile PCs 2005.' This reports focuses on the buying environment, dynamics, future intentions and trends of the SME market in Australia. IDC's key findings predict that 2005 will be a strong year for SME buying of PC hardware and reinforce that Warranty, Service and Support is still the most important factor for decisions related to vendor selection.</p>
<p>"The stable economy over the past few years has helped to sustain the SME market and keep purchasing of PC hardware from this segment healthy. To further push along demand in this segment the SME market is still engaging in the post GST refresh of those PCs that were bought to deal with the new complexity of the Goods &amp; Service Tax. This refresh cycle is specifically increasing demand from the Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) and Small Business markets during 2005," said Michael Sager, IDC Market Analyst for PC Hardware.</p>
<p>IDC has found the top three factors that impact SMEs' decisions to purchase a specific brand of personal computers. The results emphasise the fact that vendors and channel partners must focus on understanding the customer but also offering customers the desired warranty and service;</p>
<p>1) Warranty, Service and Support: This ranked as the top factor for SMEs in both 2004 and 2005, and clearly identifies that for vendors to be successful in this market they must have the necessary warranties and support functions in place. This presents a challenge to large vendors who are finding increased cost per sale as the corporate market (large tender space) slows down.</p>
<p>2) Desired Features /Capabilities: This is a very important point for vendors and their channel partners to understand. While corporate (500+ employees) customers demand a stable platform for their PCs, SME customers prefer flexibility and the ability to select PCs that scale to different parts of their organisations.</p>
<p>3) Lowest Price: Price continues to be an important factor in IT hardware procurement, especially for PCs. The important part for vendors and channel partners is to be able to meet and manage the expectations related to the two most important criteria whilst meeting the pricing needs of SMEs.</p>
