IDC Reports Record Figures for Australia’s PC Market

 • 13 August, 2004 10:55

NORTH SYDNEY, August 13th 2004 – IDC has just released the preliminary PC figures for the second quarter of 2004. The results from IDC show the PC market in Australia shipping 791,079 units (Desktop and Notebook PCs) during 2Q 2004. This was a record total market result and a solid 8.1% increase from the first quarter of the year.

The desktop market grew by 8.5% sequentially and by 13.5% from the same period last year. This is in comparison to the 7.1% growth the notebook market experienced from 1Q 2004.

IDC has found that there were particular segments in the market that helped to drive growth during the quarter. Activity in the government market space, including the notable Department of Defence tender and the Federal election, drove an increase in buying. After a strong first quarter, there was a very notable deceleration in the education space that could indicate some buying will move into the third quarter of the year.

“The PC market in 2Q 2004 performed well, especially considering growth in the notebook market was not as strong as the growth for desktop PCs. Not only was there an increase in demand from the government sector, but vendors saw an strengthening in the run-rate business during the quarter,” said Michael Sager, Market Analyst, PC Hardware.

“From a vendor perspective HP saw strong growth, especially from the desktop side of the business, to strengthen its hold on the top position. Dell was the only other vendor able to grow its share among the top 5 with Acer, IBM, and Toshiba each losing ground to the top two vendors.” Mr. Sager commented, “Aside from Optima the majority of the local whitebox vendors gave up share to the multi-national vendors during 2Q 2004,” added Mr Sager.

Top 7 Vendor Market Share (Desktop and Notebook)

Overall Share:
HP 20.6%
Dell 12.5%
Acer 8.6%
IBM 6.6%
Toshiba 5.9%
Apple 3.2%
Optima 2.6%
Others 40.0%
Total 100.0%
