NEC’s unique i-mode ringtone service promises to be a big hit

 • 28 February, 2005 17:04

NEC Australia and NEC Japan has today launched DJ Remix ‘n’ Hits Remix Studio and Medley Maker, an innovative ringtone content site, accessible through i-mode mobile handsets from February 28. The ringtone content site launch coincides with Telstra’s full scale marketing launch of the i-mode service and will be available on all i-mode handsets supported by Telstra.

NEC’s unique ringtone personalisation services marks the company’s bold move into the content services market. Giving users the ability to combine original ringtone melodies in to single medleys or to freely create ringtone remixes with personalised flavours, the service is the first of its kind ever offered in Australia.

Through the development of the DJ Remix ‘n’ Hits service, NEC has effectively added mobile content services to the company’s already impressive i-mode portfolio which currently includes the i-mode platform, as well as numerous handsets such as the N410i, N342i and much anticipated N401i, also launched on February 28.

Catering to Australia’s growing multicultural society, as well as to English speakers, the i-mode service and DJ Remix ‘n’ Hits is offered in English, Chinese and Greek languages.

In the initial stages of the services’ development, popular local music and the latest melodies from China and Greece will take centre stage, soon followed by an impressive collection of additional mobile melodies.

Predicted to revolutionise the mobile internet, i-mode offers quick and simple access to a wide range of mobile internet content on compatible handsets including Chinese language sites, shopping, entertainment, banking, i-mode email and NEC ringtones services. At the touch of a single button and an easy to use menu, Telstra’s i-mode subscribers can experience a new world of mobile content across thirteen broad categories ranging from astrology to entertainment, and shopping to travel.

From as little as $2 per month, subscribers to NEC’s DJ Remix ‘n’ Hits melody maker can access the latest and greatest in mobile ringtones from a line up of over two thousand melodies in a variety of music styles.

Along with the increasing popularity of Internet based music distribution and portable music players in Australia, the ringtone market is developing steadily with strong potential demand for the personalisation of remixing and medley ringtones. Ringtones have retained the top spot in mobile content downloads and NEC is aiming to capture a thirty per cent share of the potential i-mode ringtone market in Australia.

NEC Australia’s Managing Director, Toshiharu Iwasa, describes the launch of i-mode content service in Australia as an “exciting breakthrough in NEC Australia’s content business.”
Already delivering revenues for NEC globally, Mr Iwasa continues to add that “the growth in the ringtone market in Australia and Japan over the past two years has been incredible. Moving in to the content services space in Australia, an area that we plan to expand in the future, is significant for NEC and marks our commitment to remain a key driver in the development of creative technologies.”
