Australian IT Executives Can Not Afford to Ignore Mobile Technologies, Says IDC

<p>NORTH SYDNEY, August 16th, 2004 – Wireless technologies, and the changed working practices they make possible, are being embraced by a growing number of businesses across Australia, New Zealand and around the globe, according to the latest IDC end-user ITEyewitness report titled “Cutting The Cable: The Business Benefits of Wireless Working".</p>
<p>A study was conducted as part of IDC's end-user research to understand how Australian companies are mobilising their enterprises to lower operational costs and to improve the effectiveness of mobile workers. Interviews and case studies were conducted with CIOs and IT Executives across some of Australia’s and New Zealand's largest companies.</p>
<p>Companies are investigating and investing in a growing range of products and services as they are pushed by a desire to increase flexibility and productivity while improving communication across the supply chain. However, this IDC study found that more than 90% of Australian business have no comprehensive strategy in-place for the broader use of mobile technology.</p>
<p>IDC predicts mobile packet data traffic, although now only representing around 1% of total carrier revenues, will double every year until at least 2007.</p>
<p>"Ignoring the introduction of wireless technologies is no longer an option" said Catherin Bennett, Director of IDC User Programmes in Australia and New Zealand.</p>
<p>IDC’s Business Benefits of Wireless Working report provides insight into how organisations are facing top-of-mind issues surrounding the mobile enterprise. It offers advice on the wireless options available, the business benefits they can provide, and the challenges they present. Armed with this knowledge, investment can be focused on the areas that will bring maximum returns for the business.</p>
<p>"To implement a technology solution and ensure that it does not fail, companies must first define their business requirements, the impact on business processes and impact on the culture of the organisation. To successfully ‘mobilise your enterprise’ it is important to define the business requirements before selecting the technology, and remember to build education and change management activities into plans. With a well defined mobility and deployment strategy, wireless technologies will prove beneficial by enabling employees to be more productive and connected to the heart of a business", commented Ms Bennett.</p>
<p>IDC concludes that while Australian &amp; New Zealand organisations are showing signs of embracing wireless non-voice and high-speed mobile data services, many still don't recognise it as a business enabler that can assist in realising new sources of revenue, reducing costs and enhancing competitive advantage. However, as this IDC study revealed, it is vital to understand your business drivers prior to selecting a technology solution.</p>
<p>"As the mobile worker population propagates among businesses, the demand for seamless integration of multiple devices to support working practices increases. Across IDC's Australian and New Zealand InTEP (Information Technology Experience Program) membership base, we have found the majority of IT Executives today have a range of mobile workers to support. This not only increases the complexity of an enterprise's IT architecture, but places additional demands on requirements to support this new breed of worker 24/7", added Ms Bennett.</p>
