BizTalk serves up $25k cash prizes for developers

Local Microsoft partners and customers can pit their development skills against the world for $US25,000 in prize money as part of the BizTalk Server 2004 Developer competition.

The global competition offers five cash prizes for innovative programs built on the new BizTalk Server integration platform and written in Visual Studio .Net. First prize is $US15,000.

Programs entered should extend the functionality of BizTalk Server, according to Microsoft.

The local contact for the competition, Microsoft Australia's BizTalk product manager, Sarah Bond, said there were plenty of opportunities in building adapters that integrate applications from different vendors.

"There's a lot of potential in adapters that support local industry, or ones that support some form of electronic schema for a specific community," she said.

She said the manufacturing and finance markets had proven popular for Australian partners developing for the platform.

Accordingly, the conditions state adapter entries be ones not created by Microsoft or its partners. Independent software vendors have contributed to the more than 350 adapters currently available for the platform.

Entries could also implement generic patterns on BizTalk Server -- request/response.

In addition to the five main prizes, two prizes of $US1000 are also on offer to the best entries from programmers with no prior experience in BizTalk or Visual Studio.Net.

The closing date for entries is August 31. Microsoft's BizTalk Server group in the US will determine the winning programs.

Entry details are available via the Microsoft US page.
