EMC Displaces Rivals In A Competitive Bid To Win Woolworths Storage Project

 • 23 August, 2004 11:57

Sydney, Australia – 23 August 2004 – EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage management, has boosted its presence in the Australian market by winning a multi-million dollar contract to supply storage products and services to Australia’s leading food retailer Woolworths. EMC secured the contract after a competitive win against all the top suppliers in the storage industry.

Woolworths was looking for a long-term storage partner to assist in the design and implementation of a consolidated storage strategy. It made the decision to implement two Enterprise Class Symmetrix DMX3000 systems, the first to be deployed in Australia. The new infrastructure will support critical mainframe and midrange applications, including data warehousing and the roll out of a set of supply chain management applications.

Woolworths is also implementing a tiered storage strategy using the CLARiiON CX700 for non-critical platforms such as development Unix and Windows servers. The CLARiiON allows Woolworths to achieve massive scalability at a low cost and integrates seamlessly into the centrally managed SAN infrastructure.

Steve Redman, Managing Director, EMC Australia and New Zealand, said: “By implementing a multi-tiered storage approach that combines Symmetrix 3000 and CLARiiON CX700, Woolworths is moving towards the Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) path, ensuring that the right type of information is stored on the most appropriate storage system.

“This competitive win reaffirms EMC’s strength in the Australian market and emphasises Woolworths’s confidence in our products and service delivery, which is vital in this long-term relationship. We have won 50 new customers in the last three months, which demonstrates we are providing the right solutions for customers at all ends of the market,” Redman said.

Woolworths put its storage infrastructure to tender early this year. After several months of project scoping and evaluation, Woolworths awarded the multi-million dollar contract to EMC, which will provide storage hardware, software and services.

“Woolworths decided to go with us as a long-term business partner because of our good track record in delivering advanced technology and top quality service. We were not selected just to push boxes,” Redman said.

The combination of EMC’s high end Symmetrix and CLARiiON will ensure a balanced allocation of storage resources at Woolworths as it deals with high volume transactions for its daily operations as well as its monthly information processing.
