UTSePress breaks boundaries in online publishing

 • 28 January, 2004 13:58

The University of Technology, Sydney took the lead today in online publishing of academic papers with launch of UTSePress which will host an array of local and international scholarly journals accessible via the Internet.

PORTAL Journal of Multidisciplinary International Studies is the first e-journal to be delivered by UTSePress and shared the launch, which was conducted via a trans-Pacific link joining UTS with the Journal's Editor in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Portal permits full online peer-review of scholarship published in the journal in international, regional, area, migration, and ethnic studies. Critical and creative work will appear in many languages including Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese, Croatian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, and Serbian.

UTSePress also currently hosts a research publication repository and UTS electronic theses that have been added to the Australian Digital Theses system.

UTS University Librarian Alex Byrne said while it was not the only online publishing service in Australia, UTSePress possessed features which pushed the boundaries of electronic publishing and would enable expansion in the volume and range of academic material available online.

"UTS is not only committed to taking advantage of new technologies for publishing purposes, it also seeks to promote scholarship across a boundary-less world," Mr Byrne said.

"Through the establishment of UTSePress we have created a new means of publishing international research and scholarship in areas in which UTS has an edge.

"We are also actively promoting UTSePress to scholarly institutions here and internationally. Services such as this provide a real alternative for making scholarly work available.

"These are exciting times and it is appropriate that UTS with its international focus is helping drive these new opportunities for sharing knowledge."

Mr Byrne said UTS was today (28/1/04) hosting a workshop on publishing scholarship online, which would feature speakers from Australia and overseas.

"Many specialists from Australian and New Zealand universities are registered to attend this landmark event which we hope will spread the word on e-publishing and prompt delegates to consider providing material via UTSePress," he said.
