Telstra has expressed support for competitive tendering for provision of the Universal Service Obligation (USO).
The carrier yesterday stated its view that competitive tendering for the USO would result in selection "of the most efficient operator and identify the minimum subsidy required to provide the USO".
According to Telstra, competitive tendering for provision of the USO would "test the credibility of its competitors and demonstrate whether they can offer the USO at greatly reduced costs, as they have continually claimed".
Telstra is also calling for adjustments of the USO's cost-modelling process, to apply until competitive tendering occurs.
The USO is a requirement that telephone services are of a "reasonable" standard for customers throughout Australia.
