Telstra launches internet by satellite

Telstra has launched a high-speed internet service by satellite.

The service will offer Internet connection speeds of up to 400Kbps and will be available through Telstra ISP Big Pond.

People living in remote and rural areas of Australia will be amongst the first to be offered the service"It..allows business based in regional or rural Australia to use the internet for marketing, promotion or e-commerce just as city-based businesses have been, and it brings transactional capabilities to customers in every part of Australia," said Ted Pretty, group managing director, Telstra Convergent Business.

Customers in areas which do not have access to 64Kbps ISDN will get a 50 per cent subsidy, up to a value of $750, on hardware and installation needed for the satellite internet service.
