Software heavyweights Informix and SAP have joined forces to deliver SAP's R/3 enterprise resource planning suite on the Linux platform.
The move lends even more credibility to the burgeoning operating system, following similar announcements from major hardware and software suppliers. A local SAP official speculated there was a perception that Linux was more stable and efficient than Windows NT, and said Linux could be a challenge to that platform. However, the Australian market was yet to show a huge demand for the platform on an enterprise level, the official said.
The partnership will see Informix's Dynamic Server Linux edition support R/3. SAP expects to release R/3 on Linux in the third quarter of 1999. Once general availability is announced, an SAP R/3 and Informix Dynamic Server, Linux Edition Suite bundle will be available through traditional SAP distribution channels, officials said. Informix was the first major database vendor to deliver product on Linux.
