Telco industry opts for monthly Y2K reports

The telecommunications industry will make regular monthly updates on the state of the year 2000 compliance within the industry, officials announced last week.

The reporting schedule is a joint initiative of the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) and the Australian Communications Industry Forum (ACIF), comprising of carriers, carriage service providers, industry associations and consumer groups.

According to officials, a program of "inter-carrier testing" will take place to address the issue of year 2000 cross-network continuity.

Tests are scheduled to start this month and will continue until July 1999. Officials said the tests will cover mobile to mobile, fixed to fixed, mobile to fixed and fixed to mobile services.
