LAN sales hit $US5.8b in Q1

Revenue generated from the worldwide local area network (LAN) market has grown to $US5.8 billion in the first quarter of 1999, according to industry researcher, Dataquest.

This is an increase of 19.1 per cent over the same period last year.

According to Dataquest, the worldwide router market has increased 38 per cent to $1.8 billion and the LAN switches market has grown to $1.6 billion.

Cisco Systems continues to lead the worldwide market, with Nortel Networks in second place and 3Com jumping into third place, Dataquest said.

In terms of favoured technology, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet remain the strongest growing segments within the LAN switches market, with revenues from Fast Ethernet switch equipment to reach $7.5 billion by the end of 1999.

According to Dataquest, 10Mbit/sec Ethernet continues to lose ground in the market, with revenues declining by 44.2 per cent.
