ACCC canvasses number porting

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released a discussion paper which argues that introducing number portability could benefit competition in the mobile telephony market.

Number portability means that users need not change their phone numbers when switching carriers.

"The paper also says it is technically feasible to implement an integrated solution to mobile number portability across different mobile services (such as GSM and CDMA), and were mobile number portability (MNP) to be implemented, it should be required across all mobile digital technologies," said Rod Shogren, commissioner, ACCC.

The ACCC intends to issue a final decision on mobile number portability during Q3 1999, Shogren said.
