Davnet offers video on demand

Telecommunications carrier Davnet has signed a licence with Ericsson Australia and Simson Media for the use of a video-on-demand system for the CBD areas in Melbourne and Sydney.

Called Multimedia Hotel, the system is locally designed by Ericsson and will be run over the city networks of Davnet and new partner Magna Data.

According to officials, the solution enables clients to access and distribute video and multimedia content over the Internet or company networks.

According to Grant Boydell, business development manager at Ericsson, Davnet was selected as a licensee for the solution because it uses a system that allows all incoming data -- phone lines, intranet, Internet, linked suppliers, as well as TV -- to be sent down a single line.
