Digital radio trial kicks off

Four of Sydney's radio networks have combined to trial digital radio.

The consortium, comprising the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Austereo Network, the Australian Radio Network and 2KY Racing Radio, have begun digital broadcasts from 2KY's digital transmitter in Parramatta, a western Sydney suburb.

A second digital transmitter will be established in downtown Sydney, and is scheduled to start operations on October 1.

Digital radio will deliver interference-free radio, and receivers with built-in screens will allow stations to distribute additional information to listeners.

There is also the potential for audiences to have mobile Internet access and datacasting services.
