Hutchison moves closer to CDMA

Hutchison Telecommunications has opened a technical centre in Sydney's Lane Cove that will serve as the company's national network management and control centre for its Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network. The network is due for commercial launch in mid 2000.

Barry Roberts-Thomson, managing director, Hutchison¸ at the centre's opening, said the company had successfully completed switch and interconnect testing for the CDMA network.

Roberts-Thomson also reported that trials of its CDMA LocalZone service were progressing well.

LocalZone will enable customers to make calls within a registered local zone, typically the customer's home, which will be billed as wireline calls rather than mobile calls.
