Telstra loses local call monopoly

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is expected to confirm this week plans to open up the local call market to competition.

The move would see the ACCC unbundle Telstra's local-loop network which will allow its competitors to enter the local call market using Telstra's infrastructure. The ruling is expected to apply to Internet and data services for corporate users.

Existing local call prices are not expected to change for some months, officials said.
