Commuters will perceivably be able to use Visa's e-purse payment system to pay for public transport around the world following an announcement from Visa and local smart card specialist, ERG Group.
Visa and ERG Group formed a partnership to integrate chip-card-based transit applications with the Visa Cash electronic purse application using the Common Electronic Purse Specifications (CEPS), officials said yesterday. Visa and ERG will endorse and support each other's transit-related applications.
Mass transit is a "key application" in introducing smart cards to the greater public. Officials said electronic purse schemes provided a convenient payment tool for low-value, frequent purchases.
The new development will be platform independent and reliant on systems that comply with Visa's version of CEPS.
