Cable & Wireless Communications has selected Nortel Networks as systems integrator for a global network expansion.
The two-year contract is worth more than $US400 million.
Roll out of the internet-based network will begin in Europe and will later be extended to Australia and New Zealand.
Carrying voice, data and video, the new network is the first stage of C&W's $1 billion, five-year network investment plan, announced in late 1998.
"Nortel Networks' role will be to work with our other suppliers to ensure that, as we rapidly expand our global IP and data capabilities, we integrate these with our existing and extensive international network," said Mike McTighe, chief executive, C&W global operations.
