3Com yesterday announced its strategic plans for CommWorks, a key part of its IP telephony strategy for service providers.
According to 3Com, the strategy outlines a multiphase approach to IP (Internet Protocol) telephony, offering service providers a road map for migrating voice traffic onto IP-based networks.
CommWorks provides trunking for the interconnection of existing infrastructures, such as IP, the public switched telephone network, and Signaling System 7 network.
In addition, the CommWorks architecture offers access to enhanced services, such as unified messaging, internet call waiting, and prepaid calling.
According to 3Com officials, future phases in CommWorks development towards the goal of converged networking include the incorporation of a Web-based call centre, Web conferencing, voice virtual private network, wireless IP telephony, and intelligent clients.
