Nortel Networks followed its recent US launch of additions to its Internet telephony strategy with a local announcement of the products to be available later this year.
In one of the first announcements of unified voice and data products, officials detailed 12 new products and enhancements.
New products available soon include: the Inca Telecommuter, Inca M10 Communication System, Inca M1 Communication System, iRemote, and i2004 Internet Telephone. Enhanced products include: the Meridan 1IP Communication System, while Enterprise Edge and telephony enabled products include the Multiservice access switch VoIP expansion module for BayStack ARN.
Touting IP telephony as Nortel's future, Mark George, Nortel Asia Pacific president of enterprise solutions, said in 1998 the company invested around $1.5 billion in IP research and development projects. This is 60 per cent of Nortel's entire R&D effort for the year that amounted to $2.5 billion Steve Rust, managing director for Nortel's enterprise solutions division, said the organisation is working on developing solutions with 99.999 per cent reliability and performance.
"Our goal is to get to the five 9s and six 9s level of performance because the new world is going to require it," Rust said. b
