Software ready for PDAs
Tivoli Systems has announced a Smart Handheld Device Manager which it says will provide deployment management of personal digital assistants (PDAs) via its Enterprise application. PDA penetration is expected to surge from eight million in 1999 to more than 35 million in 2003, according to IDC. The solution lets operations staff manage anything from a mainframe computer to a PDA using the same management paradigm and user interface, company officials said. Functions include server-based synchronisation support, wireless connectivity, support for Windows-powered devices and other functional improvements. Built on an open cross-platform technology, Tivoli said a mix of best of breed platforms and devices can be achieved. It is due for release in Australia on December 22 2000.
Veritas names new CEO
The former vice president at Oracle, Gary Bloom, has been named president and chief executive officer of Veritas Software, a key Oracle partner. Bloom will also join Veritas Software board of directors. Mark Leslie who has served as chairman and CEO of Veritas since 1990 will continue as chairman of the board of directors and will maintain a full-time role in the company. Larry Ellison, chairman and CEO of Oracle said with Gary at Veritas Software Oracle expects an already close relationship to grow even closer.
Computerworld wins award
Computerworld's Lauren Thomsen-Moore was recognised as "best newcomer to journalism" at the annual ABP Bell Awards for Excellence. The Australian Business Publishers Association awards recognise excellence in business and specialist publishing. CW's sister publication CIO won Business Magazine of the Year. PC World, also an IDG publication, was awarded best specialist magazine of the year, and stable mate The Industry Standard Australia took out the magazine launch of the year award with best product information series of the year going to Australian Reseller News for the second year in a row. The awards attracted more than 250 entries from print and online publications.
