Extending its services capabilities into the Asia-Pacific region, Lucent Technologies yesterday opened a NetCare Service Centre in North Ryde, Sydney.
NetCare is the brand name given to Lucent's global professional services business.
Mike Butcher, CEO and president of Lucent Technologies Asia Pacific, said the $15 million facility will service 14 different markets in the Asian region through five integrated functional units, including consulting, end-to-end networking skills, and outsourced network management and monitoring.
Enterprise, service provider and carrier customers will benefit from the facility, he said, naming Macquarie Corporate Telecommunications as the centre's first full-service customer.
According to Butcher, the Sydney facility is the third NetCare Centre to be established. Centres already exist in France and Florida to service the European and US markets, he said.
Australia was selected to house the Asia-Pacific facility over Hong Kong and Singapore, based on the "superior infrastructure" and " highly skilled and technical workforce" available, Butcher said.
According to Butcher, Lucent's acquisition of US-based data networking company International Network Services (INS), announced Monday, will boost Lucent's NetCare division, primarily through the multivendor capabilities it offers. Butcher said the acquisition creates the potential for worldwide NetCare revenues to hit $US1 billion in the next six months.
