IBM, airline industry group to ally on e-ticketing

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced yesterday that it has reached an agreement with IBM to develop an international system standard for electronic ticketing.

The new system will make ticketing much easier by linking travellers to a central system and allowing them to arrange to fly on more than one airline on the same trip, according to IATA.

The announcement also means that the 266 member airlines of the IATA that don't currently have an e-ticketing system in place do not have to develop or maintain individual systems. Instead, they may use all the functions of the new centralised service.
