Nokia to acquire US startup Rooftop for $US57M

Nokia Corp has announced an agreement to acquire US-based wireless broadband company Rooftop Communications Corp for $US57 million in cash and stock.

The California-based startup company introduced the industry's first multihop, multipoint wireless IP (Internet Protocol) routers, called Internet Radios, earlier this year, Nokia officials said.

Internet Radios allow ISPs (Internet service providers) to bypass the wired local loop and offer constant wireless service by combining digital radio frequency platforms with the company's own Internet Radio Operating System.

Finland-based Nokia hopes the IP wireless bypass solutions will complement its other IP products to help the company provide global IP mobility. The purchase of Rooftop comes just days after Nokia announced the merger of three business units to form the Nokia Internet Communications unit.
