SingTel plans to expand Optus operations

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) said today it planned to expand Cable & Wireless Optus' Australian operations, including the development of third-generation (3G) business opportunities.

The carrier also said it would continue to manage C&WO'S day-to-day operations as a stand-alone business and combine both companies' international networks.

SingTel has released its bidder's statement in its $17 billion takeover of C&W Optus, Australia's number two carrier.

The statement said it would seek to retain existing C&W Optus employees as it pushed forward plans to develop 3G business opportunities in Australia and expand the telco's local business.

The takeover remains subject to shareholder and Foreign Investment Review Board approvals.
