A new report showing a surge in Internet use by Australian business is proof ofthe nation's IT credentials, the Prime Minister John Howard said today.
He said a report from the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE),which showed almost 40 per cent of all households are now connected to theInternet, is proof Australia is leading the world in adapting to informationtechnology.
The report compiles a series of studies into worldwide IT use and found thenumber of Australian businesses with access to the Internet has increased 93per cent between 1998 and 2000.
Australia ranked ninth out of 20 developed nations in terms of home PC use ofthe Internet and in most cases Australia was ahead of the UK and New Zealand,and only marginally behind Scandinavia, Hong Kong and Japan.
"[The data] indicates that Australia's performance and growth in terms ofuptake of Internet technology and Internet infrastructure is strong and poisedto continue in years to come," the report stated.
