Defence and IT pal up on $8b spendfest

More than $8 billion worth of IT projects in Australia's defence industry are planned over the next decade.

Speaking at the Defence and Industry 2001 conference today, Defence Minister Peter Reith forecast good times for the defence industry with the Government planning to spend $50 billion on new equipment.

He said the Defence White Paper outlines 29 projects in the aerospace sector worth $24 billion and 67 projects in the IT sector, worth $8 billion.

Reith encouraged participants at the conference to adopt a far more strategic approach to procurement particularly in the area of IT.

The Defence Recognised Supplier Scheme (DRSS) which allows approved Australian businesses to use a logo identifying themselves as suppliers to the department is being launched this afternoon.
