Intel yesterday announced Pentium III processors running at 750MHz and 800MHz, its fastest performers for the desktop.
The announcement occurs several weeks ahead of what was widely expected to be Intel's original launch date for the 750MHz chip, and months in advance of the expected launch of the 800MHz chip.
Pentium III processors, including the new 750MHz and 800MHz chips, feature Advanced Transfer Cache which connects to the processor via a 256-bit wide data path, according to a statement from Intel. Advanced System Buffering is another source of Pentium III efficiency, since it increases the buffers between the processor and its system bus, the statement said.
Pentium III processors running at 750MHz and 800MHz are available for shipment to manufacturers now, according to Intel. The 750MHz is priced at $US803 in 1,000-unit quantities and the 800MHz chip is available at $851 in those quantities, the company said.
