BT May Move into Latin American Telecom Markets

LONDON (05/02/2000) - U.K. telecom giant British Telecommunications PLC (BT) has been exploring the options of moving into key markets in Latin America, but has yet to make firm commitments, a BT spokeswoman today confirmed.

Alfred Mockett, president and chief executive officer of BT Worldwide has been in talks with several Latin American companies recently, though stopped short of making any deals, according to BT spokeswoman Aileen Boughen.

"He was talking in very general terms about just conducting meetings with companies," Boughen said. "It is obviously a very exciting market, but there are no commitments on our part." News reports claiming that BT is certainly moving into the Latin American market are not entirely correct, she added.

BT Worldwide was formed last year by BT to lead the company's international expansion in the mobile phone, IP (Internet Protocol) telephony and multimedia markets.

Last week Mockett mentioned Brazil, Mexico and Argentina as the company's top priorities, Boughen said.
