Smithton, on the far north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia, lies on the Bass Highway, 85 km north-west of Burnie.

Area NBN Deployment

Tasmania has been chosen as an NBN test site.

As part of the National Broadband Network, the government plans to:

fast-track negotiations with the Tasmanian Government, as suggested by the Panel of Experts, to build upon its National Broadband Network proposal to begin the rollout of a FTTP network and next generation wireless services in Tasmania as early as July

A tender has been opened by Aurora Energy, with plans to deliver wholesale-only, open access broadband network services in the second quarter of 2010

Smithton NBN Deployment

Backbone fibre – fibre optic transmission links – will be built from Port Latta to Smithton. The network will be rolled out and operated by newly-created company, the Tasmanian NBN Company (TNBN Co), which is jointly owned by the National Broadband Network Company and Aurora Energy.
