About Midway Point

Midway Point is an outer suburb of Hobart. It is in the local government area of Sorell Council, and is located on a small peninsula.

Area NBN Deployment

Tasmania has been chosen as an NBN test site for the National Broadband Network (NBN).

As part of formulating and testing construction techniques, the government plans to:

“fast-track negotiations with the Tasmanian Government, as suggested by the Panel of Experts, to build upon its National Broadband Network proposal to begin the rollout of a FTTP network and next generation wireless services in Tasmania as early as July.”

After a tender process, Aurora Energy, was chosen to roll-out backhaul fibre between points of interconnect in Tasmania, as well as fibre to the premises in conjunction with Tasmania NBN Co (TNBN Co).

The Tasmanian test sites will be rolled out in three stages. The first stage covers the towns of Midway Point, Scottsdale and Smithton, with intentions to deliver the first NBN services beginning July from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Internode, iiNet and iPrimus.

Second stage towns include Sorell, Deloraine, George Town, St Helens, Triabunna, Kingston Beach and South Hobart.

90,000 premises will be connected in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie, as part of the roll-out’s third stage.

Midway Point NBN Deployment

Midway Point is an outer suburb of Hobart. It is in the local government area of Sorell Council, and is located on a small peninsula.

The town was one of three selected as part of the Stage 1 NBN rollout in the state. Under the construction stage, fibre backhaul was built from Cambridge to Midway Point and Midway Point to Triabunna. The network was rolled out by Leighton Holdings subsidiary John Holland.

The first customers were connected from July in 2010.

Though reportedly under the approximately $37 million budget, the rollout received poor response from residents, with less than 600 premises signing up to the cable across the three stage 1 sites as of early 2011.

I'm very interested in getting connected - what are the costs and Terms Of Conditions - are they on the internet anywhere yet. I would have thought there would be a big Advt campaign to get it al started. Malcolm Kingston TAS 7050

I have been connected to the NBN today! ( well the wires are attached to the side of the house anyway) I have other providers send me advertising material sometime ago to get on board with them but nothing from my current provider Telstra. Before I sign up I want to see what they can do service wise. That is all I am waiting for now. Any idea when we we see anything positive in that direction? Dont want to lock into anything right now until I see what they can do.

I signed up for fibre optic 4 weeks ago. although the fibre optic team have "done their bit", they say the conclusive stage lies with Aurora to put in their line. I am still waiting (3-4 weeks later)after numerous phone calls only to be told each time by the fibre optic team is is out of their hands and up to Aurora now. I work from home so this has been an absolute inconvenience to me and I am still waiting to get some sort of conclusion so I can be up and running with my work. The greatest disappointment comes from the fact when we first made the enquiry, after saying I work from home, was to be told it would only take a couple of days and was rest assured I would be up and running towards the end of the week. I can't help but wonder who is letting whom down here. I am very disappointed with the service and am in the process now of considering another provider. One would think at the onset, that it should be stated that Aurora just simply take their time and it could take weeks before one can have access to this "fibre optic service" How discouraging and disappointing.
