Two tenacious exploits debunk vendor claims 01/10/2008 09:24:00
The Adobe Flash Clipboard Hijack and the XP Antivirus exploit throw "state-of-the-art" Web security clients for a loopMany sandbox security vendors claim that their products stop all known and unknown attacks. Even assuming the ability to curtail all known attacks could be proven, it's simply impossible to believe that any piece of software could halt all unknown attacks. Of course, that doesn't prevent the vendors from making empty promises or the malware authors from proving them wrong. - +
Sandbox security versus the evil Web 01/10/2008 09:02:00
Five products strive to trap drive-by downloads and other threats in a virtual Web browsing space, with mixed resultsThe Internet is a scary place. Criminal malware lurks on legitimate and illegitimate Web sites alike, looking to steal your money one way or the other. Vendors have been scratching their collective heads attempting to make more consumers safer, more often. One of the results has been a class of anti-malware software that I call sandbox protection products. These items encapsulate Internet browsers (and e-mail programs and sometimes any other program you can run) within a virtual, emulated cocoon designed to keep malware from reaching and modifying the underlying host computer. - +
Review: Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 -- fast, lean, effective 13/08/2008 11:34:24
The latest version of this increasingly popular suite offers a range of security tools in a low-load interface.Fans of all-in-one security suites should take a serious look at the just-released Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, which includes modules for antivirus, antispyware, firewall and more, yet uses little enough system resources and RAM that it won't slow down or clog up your system. - +
Titus Labs helps stop e-mail slips 02/06/2008 08:15:16
Message Classification allows data sensitivity labeling to be added to e-mailsThe news media is full of stories about e-mails and documents that were better off not sent. Last year an airline CEO accidentally sent an ultra harsh e-mail to complaining customers, the text of which was obviously not intended for the customers. Frustrated employees frequently send embarrassing internal memorandum to public news sources. And is there an e-mail user who hasn't regretted accidentally sending an e-mail to an unintended party? Whether e-mail or documents are sent intentionally or not, it is clear that content intended for a restricted audience is being shared with unauthorized parties on a regular basis. - +
ZoneAlarm ForceField: Compromised in sixty seconds 22/05/2008 09:45:47
Check Point's virtualized browser security client, like would-be panaceas before it, fails to live up to the hypeCheck Point Software's new Web browser security software, called ZoneAlarm ForceField, integrates a host-based firewall, anti-spyware, Web site rating, anti-phishing, and keylogger-jamming into a limited virtualization environment with the elegant user interface you've come to expect from the ZoneAlarm brand. Its goal is to provide superior anti-malware protection against the increasingly prevalent and complex threats posed to Internet surfers. - +
RedSeal Security Risk Manager 12/03/2008 09:53:05
RedSeal SRM gathers far-flung network configuration data to help identify, measure, and manage large-network risksJust this week while I was on-site, an IT services company serving a client of mine asked for my help. They needed to know where to put their efforts in securing information. Their customers are varied, with a range of systems and connectivity. For each infrastructure, they wanted to know, where are the highest risks? In one case, there are two connections to the Internet, remote access, mobile users, and a complex web of systems and networks, some with external data sharing. - +
Network review: ConSentry LANShield Switch 15/02/2008 09:09:17
Policy-based switching and great reporting add muscle to network security.Traditionally, many IT specialists have seen networks as an open channel. They allow an infinite variety of devices to communicate, and the best networks make communication simple, free, and instantaneous -- like the air we breathe. Back in the early days of the Internet, shell accounts were free for the asking. Few people used passwords. It was an easy and altruistic era. - +
Orchestria protects sensitive data 19/02/2007 11:53:53
Orchestria reduces deployment complexity and accurately determines if data is at riskCompanies often ascribe success to "doing one thing and doing it right." That philosophy is working for Orchestria and its ECC (electronic communication control) solution, which concentrates on preventing sensitive data from leaving organizations through e-mail, Web mail, and related channels, including blogs. - +
Billion BiGuard S10 SSL VPN 04/01/2007 07:10:20
This is no UTM wonder, but it does SSL VPNing quite well. And it is as cheapWhen it comes to security hardware, small businesses are getting a heck of a lot for their money these days, and not just from the established names either. This particular security box of tricks, the BiGuard S10, comes from Billion Electric, based out of Taiwan. Brand name companies be warned - you have some competition here. - +
PortAuthority tightens its security net 05/12/2006 15:47:50
PortAuthority 5.0 corrects the major issues in 4.0, pushing it to the top of the class in this categoryI appreciate when a vendor succeeds at developing a very good application. But what I find more admirable is when a vendor recognizes the deficits in its solutions, makes no excuses, and quickly goes back to the drawing board to make that app excellent. - +
PGP, SecurStar disk encryption products 14/11/2006 14:00:30
Two new products to protect your data even if your computer falls into the wrong handsYou may not always be able to protect your laptop from a thief, but you can keep the data it contains safe. Two new products--PGP Whole Disk Encryption 9.5 and DriveCrypt Plus Pack 3.5--promise to protect your data, so that even if your computer falls into the wrong hands, its contents will remain unreadable. Both applications are easy to use and offer an impressive suite of tools, but most users will appreciate the more practical features and lower price tag of PGP's product.
