NSW IT part of 'super' department
Sandra Rossi 30/04/2003 13:14:58

The NSW government today released details of new super departments, including the Office of Information Technology established by the Carr Government after the March state election.

The organisational structure of the newly formed NSW Department of Commerce incorporates the functions of the former departments of Public Works, Industrial Relations, Fair Trading and the Office of Information Technology. The Minister for Commerce is John Della Bosca.

Department of Commerce director-general Kate McKenzie said greater collaboration between agencies is crucial to develop better outcomes. An interim organisational structure has been developed around six operating areas but further changes are expected to be announced concerning the Office of Information Technology, formerly the Department of Information Technology and Management.

"The status of the Office has been elevated and its role enhanced in line with the government's recognition of the growing impact of information communication technology on government services," McKenzie said.

"The changes reflect the government's strong IT agenda and its commitment to maintaining NSW's position as lead state in developing and implementing e-government initiatives."

The new Offices of Government Business and Government Procurement incorporate many of the functions and roles of the former Department of Public Works and Services.

Treasury will take over procurement of capital works and asset management while a corporate development and support division will provide business support services.

The new organisational structure and reporting arrangement take effect from May 5, 2003.
