RMIT University will see the replacement of 920 network switches with Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch (ERS) 4500s.
The new switches will also provide Power-over-Ethernet support for RMIT's IP handsets and other network-powered devices like Webcams, eliminating the need for separate power boards for these devices. RMIT's data core, comprising ERS 8600 switches, will also be upgraded with 10-gigabit support in the near future.
Nortel has recently completed major data network upgrades at Macquarie University in Sydney and Edith Cowan University in Perth, both in support of high-bandwidth applications and planned IP voice networks.
