A five member team of RMIT students have developed an application that allows users to make instant flight, hotel and car bookings as well as retrieve itinerary information anytime on their mobile phones.
The team of RMIT Master of Applied Science in Information Systems students devoted 800 hours of work to develop the world-first application for GTS Interactive, an Australian company that specialises in mobile phone software products that integrate with the Web.
GTS Interactive director, Bradley Birchall, commissioned the development of the iTravel software through the RMIT School of Computer Science and Information Technology's software company, Your Software Ltd.
The RMIT company was set up to allow businesses to outsource their project work to postgraduate software engineering students and provide students with hands-on, practical experience in a commercial project environment.
Birchall said that the software was commercially available for distribution in the Asia Pacific region through Amadeus, a leading Global Distribution System (GDS) and the biggest processor of travel bookings in the world. Clients include Qantas and Flight Centre.
"In July, we presented to Amadeus Australia in Sydney. The results were so positive, we were asked to travel to Bangkok to demonstrate to the company's regional executives," Birchall said.
"Our presentation was very well received, with plans underway for GTS iTravel to partner with Amadeus to rollout across the Asia Pacific, beginning with a key client."
Four RMIT students also developed another unique product for GTS Interactive this year. GTS iPay is an application that can automatically process and reconcile payments from users' mobile phones.
