The City of Melbourne has created a new online wiki to allow Melbournians to discuss the city's 2020 vision, including plans for city-wide wireless Internet, GPS traffic monitoring and a 3D Facebook.

The wiki has been designed over the last 12 months to promote discussion over the city's ambitious Future Melbourne goals to be carbon-neutral, offer the world's best higher education and research, and reduce water consumption by 40 percent.

Melbourne Lord Mayor John So said the government is the first to use a wiki for public consultation.

"We are the first local government in Australia to use this highly interactive consultation tool in this way," he said.

"The wiki is a new approach to public consultation and we encourage the public to participate in shaping the future of the city. Future Melbourne is the most ambitious and broad-ranging strategy ever produced by Council."

The government invited the community to discuss existing problems and propose initiatives for sustainability.

Co-founder of the Future Melbourne wiki, Doctor Mark Elliott, said the wiki is the first step for government to move away from planning based on fixed-documents.

"There is the opportunity for council to move beyond the plan as a fixed document, to maintaining Future Melbourne as an up-to-date and interactive information hub," Dr Elliot said.

"This hub will continue to document the current status of the plan [by] encompassing the issues, ideas and initiatives shaping the future of the city, as well as connecting those who participate."

Future Melbourne wiki

Finally tracked down this wiki at www.futuremelbourne.com.au

An interesting project where indeed anybody can edit the city's strategic plan. They also have a bunch of other cool stuff such as fictional future scenarios you can help author and some interesting videos to watch.

Going to keep an eye on this one.. definitely at the cutting edge.
