Nokia said Motorola, Sony Ericsson, with its UIQ platform, and NTT DoCoMo, with its MOAP platform, will all cooperate on the Symbian open platform. Those companies, as well as AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone will by the founding members of the foundation, Nokia added.
Gold said he expects the first device based on the Symbian Foundation's platform to be available in the first half of 2009.
The Symbian operating system, which debuted 10 years ago and is based on technology from Psion, is used on 235 models of phones and a total of about 200 million devices, Nokia officials said.
