Your end users are downloading Skype and sharing links to company Web pages on Del.icio.us. But don't panic. Although emerging consumer applications can pose security risks, here are five that offer business benefits if you manage them well.When Paul Tang first downloaded Google's desktop search application, he was impressed by its speed and power. Instead of painstakingly looking for data and files on his hard drive, he could find them with the ease of a Web search. However, Tang, chief medical information officer at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF), quickly realized that the slick application could also be dangerous.
Computer maker Mirus Innovations and software vendor Linspire have teamed to offer a line of Linux-based desktop PCs starting at US$299.
The new low-cost computers, called Koobox, are equipped with the Linspire operating system, based on the Linux operating system, and a broad range of open-source applications, including the OpenOffice.org office suite, an Internet browser, e-mail, instant messaging, a media player and a photo manager, the companies said Wednesday in a statement.
The Essential Koobox computer, which costs US$299, is designed for basic computing. The machine is equipped with the Sempron processor from Advanced Micro Devices, 256MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive.
For US$399, the Multimedia Koobox includes DVD player software, a 16x Dual Layer DVD-RW drive, 512MB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The Performance Koobox, priced at US$499, features the AMD 64-bit Athlon 3000+ processor.
The computers can be purchased online.
