Systinet Developer, which is Systinet's free tool for building Java-based Web services, will add governance capabilities by supporting the WS-I (Web Services Interoperability Organization) Basic Profile.
Being released today, Systinet 5.5 is an Eclipse plug-in. It also features support of both the WS-RM (Web Services Reliable Messaging) specification as well as Version 3 of UDDI, the Web services directory standard.
Developer enables building, testing, and publishing of Java-based Web services from within Eclipse. Systinet seeds the market with Developer in hopes of attracting users to the company's Systinet Server Web services deployment offering and Systinet Registry, a UDDI-based directory.
"The goal here [with Systinet Developer 5.5] is to allow people to create Web services that are SOA-ready. By that, we mean we support governance in this release," said Ian Bruce, director of marketing at Systinet. The Basic Profile provides for checking both integrity of WSDL files and SOAP messages on the wire.
WS-RM conformance, meanwhile, is intended to ensure reliable sending and receiving of Web services messages.
Systinet, with its Systinet Registry, has been a big proponent of UDDI. But not all have been in the UDDI camp. During the InfoWorld SOA Executive Forum on Thursday, Eric Newcomer, CTO of Iona, panned the technology, calling it "broken." UDDI has been criticized for lack of acceptance as well.
But Bruce insists UDDI is a standard and necessary for an SOA. "I think to create an SOA, you definitely need a mechanism for discovering and reusing services," he said.
An analyst also endorsed the viability of UDDI.
"UDDI is supposed to help companies build truly loosely coupled services, and it seems that after a few tries, UDDI might finally get it right," said Ronald Schmelzer, a senior analyst at ZapThink. "However, the spec still faces an uphill battle in convincing developers and architects of its role in an SOA. There's still plenty of time for that, fortunately."
Version 5.5 of Developer supports Eclipse 3.0, which is the latest release of the IDE. The tool will be available for download on Monday at systinet.com.
