Intel's new chipset

Intel has released the first chipset based on its XScale microarchitecture which is designed to increase the processing power of Internet-based applications.

The IOP310 input/output (I/O) processor chipset brings together Intel's new 80200 processor - based on the XScale microarchitecture - and its 80312 I/O companion chip. The new chipset helps boost system performance while lowering heat production.

The chipset should be available in four clock speeds, ranging from 333 to 733MHz, and will likely benefit storage markets first, including redundant arrays of independent disks, storage area networks and network attached storage.

Intel should reach full production (up to 600MHz) by the first quarter of 2001. In quantities of 10,000, the cost will vary from $US70 for the 333MHz unit to $93 for the 600MHz version.

Toshiba guides users

Toshiba's information systems division has launched a guide to help its business users make the most of their mobile technology. The Guide to Teleworking will be distributed with the Satellite, Tecra and Portege range of notebooks through Toshiba's 5-Star and specialist resellers. Divided into lift-out sections, the guide gives advice on aspects of mobile computing such as setting up and commuting tips. It was developed in association with the Teleworking Special Interest Group, which includes Pfizer Australia, Telstra and AT&T.

Kingston Technology remembers partners

Independent memory manufacturer Kingston Technology will provide memory support to Toshiba and its subsidiaries in Japan. Under the agreement, Kingston will help develop and manufacture PC66, PC100 and SODIMM memory which will be packaged as Toshiba. In turn, Toshiba will test and evaluate the modules for use in its products. Kingston incorporates six sales and marketing offices in Asia and operates four manufacturing facilities. The deal cements a global relationship between the companies, which have already partnered the US and Europe.

New Oxygen accelerator

Intercad has announced the availability of 3Dlabs' high-end graphics accelerator - the Oxygen GVX420 - for CAD and DCC users.

The 128MB workstation graphics card features 256-bit graphics capabilities and 3Dlabs' GLINT Gamma G2 second generation geometry processor. It can be installed in any standard AGP system and features dual display capability.
