Competitive local exchange carrier XO Communications and content delivery provider Akamai Technologies this week signed strategic agreements designed to boost the reach of Akamai's network and services.
Akamai operates a content delivery network that speeds the performance of customers' Web sites by caching content that's viewed frequently on a distributed series of servers.
XO and Akamai signed two agreements. The first will see XO provide Akamai with OC-3 and OC-12 connections on XO's SONET network. XO also will provide space for Akamai servers in XO data centers. The second agreement involves XO offering Akamai content delivery services to XO customers.
The deal with XO is the third resale agreement Akamai has penned with bandwidth providers this year. In March, the company signed agreements with Broadwing Inc. and Internap Network Services Corp., allowing Broadwing and Internap to resell Akamai services.
