Revitalizing an aging notebook on the cheap
All it takes is a couple hours and about $125 to breathe new life into an old laptop.

Preparing to add memory: The CPU-Z utility shows how much memory is installed and its key specs. Adding memory: Open the trapdoor where the RAM is hidden (next to the tiny logo that looks like a circuit board). Slide the new module into the slot; use a pencil eraser to snap it down gently. Installing a new hard drive: Open the hard drive cover. Pull out the old drive, attaching the new drive to the rack before inserting it into the laptop. Replacing the keyboard: Remove the screws holding the keyboard in place. Slide the old keyboard out, disconnect the old keyboard cable, and slide the new keyboard into place. Cleaning the laptop: Accumulated dust, grime and whatnot; spraying with compressed air. Loosen screws for easier access to the fan. Spray compressed air around the fan, clean the case with Fantastik; a clean machine. Software cleanup: To keep your system shipshape, try a 1-2-3 regimen of Disk Defragmenter (top left), CHKDSK (top right) and Memory Washer (bottom).
