Dimension Data announced today it has completed a $2.4 million project with Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne deploying a new converged network infrastructure, based on Cisco® 10 gigabit network and unified communications solutions.

The Women’s has relocated to a new facility in Parkville, adjacent to The Royal Melbourne Hospital. The new $250 million hospital, which provides world-class health services to women and newborn babies, has been delivered as a Public Private Partnership with private sector partner Royal Women’s Health Partnership (RWHP) consortium, led by Bilfinger Berger Project Investments, (the equity arm of multi-services construction group Bilfinger Berger) under the Victorian Government's Partnerships Victoria model.

The move to the brand-new facility provided an opportunity for Dimension Data to install an all-new IT infrastructure at the Women’s. As part of the RWHP consortium, Baulderstone Hornibrook was responsible for building the new Women's, and Dimension Data competed in an open tender for the ICT services component of the construction.

Under the contract, Dimension Data provided the Women’s with the technology, installation and operational support services for an end-to-end Cisco local area network (LAN) and wireless LAN infrastructure , as well as a Cisco Unified Communications system. The rollout was completed on schedule for the Women’s opening yesterday.

The specific technologies that were implemented by Dimension Data at the Women’s include the following products:

- Cisco 10GB LAN platform, using Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series modular high performance core switches, and Cisco Catalyst 3750-E Series high performance edge switches.

- Cisco Unified Communications for approximately 1000 users, which includes predominantly 7911G and 7941G Cisco Unified IP Phone models, also interfaced with the DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) wireless system on site.

- Cisco Wireless LAN infrastructure – based on the Lightweight Access Point (LAP) versions of the Cisco Aironet® 1100 Series with the wireless controller function provided by the Wireless Services Module (WiSM) in the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches.

- Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 6.0 (formerly Cisco Unified CallManager 6.0), the call-processing component of the Cisco Unified Communications System, integrating wired, wireless and dual mode mobile IP devices to create a secure solution for the entire organisation, whenever and wherever it is required.
