What the paper does chronicle is a large scale scenario designed to be representative of directory loads encountered in production use in the Communications industry (e.g. mobile telephony service providers) and as an infrastructure component for large scale Service Delivery architectures (that support such diverse application areas as social networking sites, or e-commerce). According to the authors: "Extrapolating from the industry use case driven workload models and the anticipated scale of directory deployment requirements projected for future application rollouts, the targets for this benchmark were set as follows:

  • Support a Directory Information Tree size exceeding 2 billion entries.
  • Sustain LDAP operation throughputs of 100,000 ops/sec or higher, with operation latencies of 5ms or lower"

You might not operate an organization of that size, but wouldn't it be nice to know that your infrastructure could grow to support something that big if necessary? Download the paper from the Oracle web site (look here for the link. You might read the "100 Million User Benchmark" paper that's linked there also). It's a fascinating read with a little something for everyone from the business leader to the back room techie.
