Indian IT services provider, Wipro, is establishing a software development centre in Sydney's west.

Details of the global IT services centre were jointly announced last week by NSW premier Morris Iemma, Wipro's global president of business services, Suresh Vaswani, and Wipro's business solutions division head for the Asia Pacific and Middle East, Rajat Mathur.

Wipro began operations in Australia in 2002 with its biggest customer base in NSW and Victoria.

The company reported revenues of US$3.47 billion last year and has more than 80,000 staff globally.

Iemma said Wipro's investment decision reinforces the government's message to Indian IT companies that Sydney is a global city offering significant opportunities to Indian IT companies.

'The centre and Wipro's expansion plans for the region also provide an impetus to the local IT industry - both in terms of technology and innovation and employment growth," he said.

Commenting on the company's regional plans, Vaswani said Wipro has a sharp focus on Australia and increasing the company's presence is one of the key strategies for growth in the future.

"The development centre strengthens Wipro's dominance in the region and integrates its Sydney operation with Wipro's global delivery model," he said.

Mathur said innovation will underpin the growth of the centre as Wipro develops and delivers solutions adapted for the Australian market.

"We are also committed to nurturing local talent, recruiting and training local employees, including graduates. This will provide a great launchpad for IT graduates wanting to build a global IT career," Mathur said.
