Overland launches backup appliances

Overland Storage Monday launched a set of entry-level tape autoloaders and tape libraries for small and mid-size businesses or remote offices within an enterprise.

The ARCvault 12 autoloader and ARCvault 24 tape library are designed for use by small businesses with few IT resources and limited budgets. Overland says a typical customer for the ARCvault systems would have as many as 50 servers and fewer than 300 employees. This customer would back up an average of 5TB of data a week and have a storage budget of $US25,000 to $US50,000.

The ARCvault 12 is a 12-cartridge LTO-2 or LTO-3 autoloader that provides from 2.4TB to 9.6TB of capacity. It is 2U (3.5 inches) high and rack-mountable; it features a touch-screen front panel for management, as well as remote management capability. Available now, it is priced at $US5,000.

The ARCvault 24 tape library has 24 cartridges for LTO-2 or LTO-3 tape drives. It has a capacity ranging from 4.8TB to 19.2TB, and, like the ARCvault 12, features a touch-screen front panel and remote management capability. The ARCvault 24 starts at $US6,000.

Both have removable cartridges for off-site storage and barcode support for media management. They can be used to back up NetWare 6.5, Windows 2000 and 2003 and Red Hat Linux computers and work with most backup software, including CA's Brightstor and ARCserve, Symantec's Backup Exec and NetBackup, EMC's Legato Networker and Commvault's Galaxy.
