8 pieces of cool WiMAX gear
Gadgets and devices that will help you connect to WiMAX.
Brad Reed (Network World) 10/10/2008 11:00:00
At last week's WiMAX World convention in the US, several vendors showcased a wide variety of portable devices and gadgets designed to run on high-speed WiMAX networks and deliver wireless broadband connectivity to mobile users. In this slideshow, we'll examine eight key pieces of WiMAX gear that caught our eye on the showroom floor and tell you what services they'll provide to WiMAX subscribers. Samsung Ultra Mobile PC SPH-P9200: This WiMAX-capable UMPC, which has 30GB of hard drive and 512MB of RAM, has a thin, fold-out keyboard that is the length of a standard PC keyboard when fully extended. The SPH-P9200, which has a 1GHz processor, can also connect to 3G High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) services. Nokia's N810 Internet tablet, which runs on the Linux-based OS2008 operating system, features a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 2GB of internal memory and a touch screen of just over four inches. During WiMAX World, Nokia mounted the N810 tablet near a car dashboard to demonstrate how the device would stay connected to the local WiMAX network and would switch off connectivity without any interruptions in service. Juni WiMAX femtocell: Femtocells usually act as mini-cell towers that take nearby cellular signals and rout them through local IP connections to deliver voice traffic over the Web. Juni's WiMAX femtocell does much the same thing, except that it sends cellular traffic directly through your WiMAX connection. The femtocell can support four simultaneous users and has residential signal coverage of between 50 and 200 meters. Siemens Gigaset SE68 WiMAX express card: This data card can be plugged into a PC for instant WiMAX access and can give users maximum download speeds of 20Mbps depending on network speed. The card supports WiMAX services in both the 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz bands, and has adapters that allow it to connect through USB 2.0 and PC Card ports. Airspan MiMAX USB device: This quadband USB device works on any notebook, UMPC or desktop computer that is compatible with USB 2.0 and can deliver a maximum throughput of 33Mbps, depending on network speed. Samsung SWC-E100 WiMAX Express Card: This card is designed specifically to run on Sprint Xohm's WiMAX network. Its download speeds top out at just over 7Mbps, although average download speeds are usually in the 2M to 4Mbps range. Soma FlexMAX MS-G100 Subscriber Gateway: Soma Networks, an equipment vendor that specializes in deploying WiMAX networks in rural or underserved areas, has developed this gateway to serve as a network entry point for homes and small businesses alike. The gateway, which has been designed to provide indoor non-line-of-sight coverage, has a total of four ports for connecting Ethernet devices and two analog ports for telephones or fax machines. Siemens Gigaset SX682 WiMAX: This device is an indoor VoIP modem that offers up 20Mbps of throughput and that runs on the 2.3GHz-2.7GHz and 3.4GHz-3.8GHz frequency bands. Much like a femtocell, the SX682 allows users to make VoIP calls over their traditional phones, although it has remote device management features such as remote provisioning and authentication that give it more security than your typical femtocell.
