.Net, Web Services, and the End of the Vendor Era 12/12/2005 11:35:23

CIOs used to be defined by which technology architecture they bet on, and the software business used to be defined by which vendors got CIOs to bet on their stuff.
When Microsoft announced .Net, Bill Gates called it a "bet the company thing".

Bridges Over Troubled Waters 06/08/2007 12:46:55

Full-blown business analysts are, like homo erectus, an end point in an evolutionary process. But it’s an evolution that is very much a work in progress
Acting as a bridge, spanning the gap between the business and IT, good business analysts are increasingly sought after by enterprises wishing to extract more value from their current and future information systems. But finding a business analyst is not easy: there are only 60 paid-up members of the Australian Business Analysis Association, and the Australian chapter of the International Institute of Business Analysis claims a paid-up list of 120 members

It Is the Business, Stupid 10/12/2006 13:59:51

When projects go pear-shaped it's usually because there's too much focus on technology, and not enough on business outcomes and associated change
In a 2005 article"Why Software Projects Fail", Cutter Consortium Fellow Robert Charette narrates an infamous anecdote about a disappearing warehouse.

The Art of Influence 11/12/2006 11:32:56

Without it, you'll never get anything done. Four veteran CIOs share some tried-and-true techniques for convincing colleagues to do what's needed
Last northern spring, Scott Heintzeman, CIO of Carlson Marketing, and his staff were developing new business intelligence systems. The project would support Carlson's marketing business unit 1to1, which helps clients mine their customer data to create individualized direct-marketing materials. Carlson executives expected the business unit - a new line of business within the company - to be one of its top performers. Heintzeman knew he had to deliver, but he couldn't do it on his own.

With SOA gaining prominence as an IT concept, LogicLibrary and the Eclipse Foundation are embarking on efforts geared toward accommodating this trend.

LogicLibrary on Tuesday revealed it has become a member of OASIS. The decision to join follows on the heels of OASIS's recent decision to develop blueprints for effective SOA architectures. The company, which offers the Logidex metadata repository, will have its vice president of technology, Brent Carlson, serve on the OASIS SOA Adoption Blueprints Technical Committee.

"We didn't see the need [to join OASIS] before but when they came out with something SOA-oriented, it's really important for us as an organisation," to now participate, said Al Himler, vice president of product management and marketing at LogicLibrary. The company plans to offer its experience in managing software development assets as it works with the committee.

Eclipse, meanwhile, acknowledged it is pondering the launch of a project pertaining to SOA and is looking for a company to lead the effort. The SOA project, however, is not in the proposal phase yet, according to an Eclipse representative.

More details of the Eclipse SOA plan are expected in coming weeks.
