"In many instances, SaaS applications are being used without the involvement or knowledge of the IT department, as business users find it easy to subscribe to and deploy SaaS," Hassey said.

Senior software analyst at Springboard Research, Balaka Aggarwal, said ease of use and management was the number one reason for deploying SaaS for 31 percent of survey respondents. He said a further 20 percent cited zero maintenance and ease of deployment.

"This proves that these factors are driving the SaaS market much more than pricing," Aggarwal said.

"Local players such as WebCentral and Saasu, are competing with the big players by establishing niche markets in Australia."
